Second-rate oral health has been linked to a number of serious medical conditions ranging from heart disease to pneumonia. While regular trips to the dentist are the starting point of healthy teeth and gums, here is a closer look at the habits that should be carried out every single day to improve the appearance of one’s smile as well as their oral health. Brushing Brushing is the cornerstone of all oral health habits and should be carried out twice a day. For the majority of people, this should be done with a soft-bristled toothbrush that has a smaller head. It is also important to avoid brushing immediately after consuming foods and beverages that are high in acidity such as energy drinks and citrus fruits. Flossing While often ignored, flossing can be just as important for a bright and healthy smile as brushing. Recent studies carried out by the American Dental Association now show that flossing or brushing first does not matter as much as doing a thorough job. This is done with an 18 inches of floss placed between the thumb and one other finger on each hand while getting all debris between every single set of teeth. While a minor amount of blood may be seen occasionally, ongoing bleeding while flossing should be reported to the dentist as it may be the result of other serious medical issues. Mouthwash Mouthwash is the perfect way to finish one’s daily hygiene habits. Mouthwash comes in a wide variety of flavors and styles, but most will want to stick to an anti-bacterial product. The primary goal of mouth wish is to remove lingering debris while killing leftover bacteria within the mouth. Most manufacturers recommend using the product for 30 seconds to a minute in order to kill the majority of germs. What to Eat A great diet will go a long ways towards impeccable oral health and a beautiful smile. This begins with a well-rounded set of meals each day including fresh produce, lean proteins, and complex carbohydrates. Calcium is exceptionally important for jaws and will help to promote healthy anchoring of the teeth as well as healthier roots. When it comes to beverages, neutral products remain the best, such as milk, and proper hydration throughout the day will help to remove food debris as well as improve saliva production. What to Avoid Citrus fruits should be consumed in moderation due to their acids attacking the enamel of one’s teeth. Sugar-laden and sticky products should also be avoided as they can attach to the teeth and further increase one’s chances of developing plaque and tartar. Certain beverages can be exceptionally damaging to one’s teeth due to the fact that they can make their way into the porous and hard to reach places of one’s mouth. Beverages with high amounts of acidity or coloring should be kept to a minimum and this includes coffee, sodas, energy drinks, wine, citrus juices, and sports drinks. When to See a Dentist While everyone should schedule a comprehensive checkup at least twice a year, it is also important to understand what exactly a dental emergency is. No matter how careful an individual may be, accidents can happen at any time. It is important to understand when symptoms are normal, however, and when they require emergency attention. This includes chipped teeth, ongoing toothaches, sharp pain in the mouth, bleeding, knocked out teeth, or pain around the jaw. The world’s understanding of oral health has improved quite distinctly in recent years with countless studies being carried out every single day. This means better options and more thorough instructions when it comes to the daily hygiene habits that will keep one’s teeth shining and their mouth healthy.
